Case: Unit Goals - A simple name for a dramatic process
aligning employees in less than 30 days.
A 400+ employee production facility wanted to move more quickly in implementing necessary changes and improvements. Supervisors and employees needed to understand and take personal ownership for key projects and results. They needed to be “engaged”. Actually, they needed many things to happen at the same time. However, time was not a luxury they had. We helped them to design an alignment process they called simply “Unit goals” – nothing dramatic in the name but the process became a dramatic turning point in engagement and performance. We trained a team of facilitators to implement the customer's desired goal - a proces to deliver aligned goals and actions in less than 30 days. Within 30 days every employee had met customers and suppliers, heard critical information about the direction of the organization, identified critical goals for their own work team, and defined the work they needed to do to support the site's important initiatives. Leaders were coached in managing work and supporting improvements. A follow-up reporting system was designed to maintain focus and provide a platform for employees to share the good news of their work and results. Lean and Six Sigma projects that had met with resistance now had new life – and new meaning. The result was outstanding. So much so, that the process was integrated into the annual action planning for the organization.
